1965년 7월 영국 웨일스의 시골에서 태어나 액세터 대학 불문학과를 졸업했다. 포르투갈에서 영어 강사로 일하다 결혼했으나 곧 이혼하고, 생후 4개월된 딸과 함께 에든버러에 초라한 방 한칸을 얻어 정착했다. 일자리가 없어 1년여 동안 생활 보조금으로 연명한 그녀는 동화 쓰기를 결심, 집 근처 카페에서 『해리포터와 마법사의 돌』을 집필했다. 생활고에 시달리며 마침내 소설을 완성했지만 복사할 돈이 없어 타자기로 8만 단어에 달하는 원고를 두 번이나 옮겼다. 해리포터 성공에 힘입어 2000년 영국 올해의 작가상을 수상하고 현재 전세계에서 가장 유명한 아동소설 작가가 되었다.
