미국의 소설가, 저널리스트. 1914년 중국 톈진에서 태어났으며, 1925년에 가족과 함께 미국으로 돌아왔다. 예일대학교와 케임브리지대학교에서 공부했으며, 한때 미국 소설가 싱클레어 루이스의 비서로 일했다. 제2차 세계대전 중 ≪타임≫의 종군기자로 활동하다가, 1947년부터 소설 집필에 전념하여 ≪아다노의 종 A Bell for Adano≫으로 퓰리처상을 수상했다. 20년간 예일대학교에서 학생들에게 픽션과 논픽션 글쓰기를 가르쳤고, 미국저자연맹 회장과 미국문예아카데미 원장을 역임했다. 1993년에 사망했다. 지은 책으로 ≪히로시마Hiroshima≫를 비롯해 ≪계곡 속으로 Into the Valley≫, ≪벽 The Wall≫, ≪전쟁을 좋아하는 자 The War Lover≫ 등이 있다.
